Using Your Own Router?
If you prefer to use your own router, the following tips can help improve your home’s Wi-Fi performance.
- Place router in a central location.
- Keep it elevated.
- Avoid cabinets and closets.
- Keep away from microwaves and cordless phones.
- Avoid placing near metal objects.
- Keep it out in the open.
Each router is different, so be sure to follow the installation instructions that came with the router. However, these are generally the steps you will need to follow in order to set up your wireless router.
Improve Your Wi-Fi Performance
- Power recycle your router regularly.
- Update router firmware.
- Use the 5 GHz band when available.
- Limit connected devices.
- Replace older routers (5+ years old).
- Secure your network with a strong password.
